About Get Paid Abroad
Why we exist
Get Paid Abroad was founded in 2022 by two freelance developers who spent more time chasing international payments than writing code. After losing $3,200 to currency conversion fees and a failed wire transfer in a single quarter, they built a simple spreadsheet to track invoices, contracts, and payment methods. That spreadsheet became a shared resource for 40 freelancers in their network, and eventually the foundation for Get Paid Abroad.
We exist because international freelancing should not require a finance degree to get paid. Our mission is to give independent professionals clear, practical guidance on invoicing, contracts, rates, and payment methods so they can keep more of what they earn and spend less time on admin.
What we do
We publish guides, templates, and comparison tools that cover:
- Invoicing requirements and tax considerations for cross-border work
- Contract clauses that protect freelancers when clients are in another jurisdiction
- Rate-setting strategies that account for currency risk and payment delays
- Payment method comparisons, including fees, speed, and availability by country
Every piece of content is reviewed by a practicing freelance consultant or a licensed accountant before publication. We do not accept payment for positive reviews, and we disclose any affiliate relationships at the top of each article.
Who we are
The Get Paid Abroad editorial team is led by Maya Chen, a former international tax consultant who spent six years advising freelancers at a Big Four firm, and Liam O'Connor, a freelance web developer who has worked with clients in 14 countries. They are supported by a network of contributing writers and reviewers who are active freelancers, accountants, and contract lawyers.
Our team has collectively invoiced clients in over 30 countries and navigated payment systems from PayPal to Wise to local bank transfers. We have made the mistakes we write about—missed tax forms, unfavorable contract terms, and payment methods that seemed cheap until the exchange rate hit.
Our values
Accuracy over speed. We would rather publish a guide a week late than publish one with wrong fee information. Every payment method comparison is checked against the provider's current published rates at the time of writing, and we date-stamp each article so you know when it was last reviewed.
Transparency. We clearly label sponsored content and affiliate links. Our recommendations are based on testing and research, not on who pays us the most. We do not sell user data.
Practicality. We avoid jargon and theoretical advice. If a tip cannot be applied to a real invoice or contract, we leave it out.
Community. We regularly update our content based on questions from readers. If you have a problem we have not covered, you can email us and we will consider it for a future article.
Why you can trust us
We are not a payment processor or a law firm. We are freelancers and former consultants who have been in your position. Our content is reviewed for accuracy by independent professionals, and we correct errors promptly. You can read our editorial policy and correction log on our website.
We do not claim to have all the answers. International payments are complex and change frequently. What we offer is a starting point: clear explanations, real examples, and a commitment to telling you when something is outside our expertise.
